June 8th 2006, Roane County Anti-drug Coalition/Clayton’s Lesson hosted the first annual Vigil for Lost Promise. The idea originated from the Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA hosted a national Vigil for Lost promise at their headquarters in Washington DC on the same day.

The members of RCADC / Clayton’s Lesson realized that many local families have suffered from the loss of a loved one due to an overdose and they may not have the time or resources to travel out of state to attend the national event. We wanted to make honoring their loved one more convenient.

The Vigil was held at Kingston City Park from 6-9pm. Their were many quest speakers including the General Sessions/Juvenile Judge, private practice and inpatient/outpatient counselors , people with personal stories and a representative from the DEA Demand Reduction Program. Also in attendance were people involved in drug prevention, treatment and education, Clergy of many faiths, County Executives and individuals concerned about out community’s drug problem.

The Tennessee National Guard and the Elks Lodge Drug Awareness trailers were on display, the local chapter of the Shriners provided Clowns for the children.

There was a memorial wall for the friends and families in attendance to place a picture of their loved ones whose life was lost due to an overdose (Their Lost Promise).

For too long drug abuse has been stigmatized and families and friends have felt shame, but there are thousands of people that have lost a loved one due to an overdose. We hope that this event helped to shine light on this problem and allow people to realize that they are not alone. There is hope and help.

The event ended with the lighting of candles and a prayer to remember those who have died from drugs and to shine a light of hope for the future. This will be an annual event.

In the pictures you will see Clayton’s mother along with her husband Jon, Melody Kidd – Private practice counselor, Richard Dunn – DEA, Whaylan Payne – Minister, John West – Bradford Health Services, Katie Medicus – Director of Family Therapy at Cornerstone
